Flats out of favour with home buyers

 The cheapest house to sell in England and Wales last year was a terrace home in Middlesbrough which went for £16,000. By contrast, the average price paid for a property in England and Wales was £161,727 – compared with £164,916 in 2010.

More worryingly for agents was the low number of transactions, at under 540,000 during the first 11 months of last year.

The statistics are from the Land Registry, which marks its 150th anniversary this year.

It has released the following information for last year, although it relates only until the end of November and does not include its latest report for December.

* The most expensive property sold in England and Wales was £19.25m for a detached house in Hampstead, north London

* The cheapest property was £16,000 for a terrace house in Middlesbrough

* The region with the biggest price fall over the year was the North-East (-5.4%)

* The region with the biggest price rise over the year was London (1.4%)

* From January to November inclusive, there were 539,577 property sales in England and Wales

* The county with the most property sales was Greater London

* The county with the least property sales was Merthyr Tydfil

* Terrace houses were the type of property most sold
. Flats were the types of properties least sold in 2011

The number of properties sold for over £1m in England and Wales in 2011 was 6,275. Of these, 16 went for over £10m.
