John Healey, the Housing Minister, has an interesting attitude to homeowners whose circumstances change, creating financial problems that lead to repossession.
Clearly he has never been in the situation himself, as he said, on BBC Radio that “For some people, it can be the only and, it can in fact in the circumstances, be the best option for them to allow their home to be repossessed.”
This from the Labour Party, the party of the people, the party that is in touch with the ‘ordinary man’. Who knows, after the election, he may find himself less secure.
If he should lose his position as Housing Minister and, even his position as an MP, he wouldn’t need his second home, paid for by the taxpayer, but his own home in Yorkshire is probably safe, especially as he made an £88,000 profit when he sold his London flat last year, having had the interest on the mortgage (£690 per month) paid for by the taxpayer for 8 years.
Sarah Teather, LibDem housing spokesman, commented, “If this is John Healey's best response to record repossession figures then he should just shut up”. Yes, shut up John.
